Thames Street Oyster House

When the Thames Street Oyster House opened in 2011, it brought some unique flavors to the Baltimore area, adding Mid-Atlantic and New England styles to the local Maryland style of seafood. Since then, the Thames Street Oyster House has become one of the most popular seafood places in Fells Point. Seating is limited, and the restaurant recommends making reservations in advance, if possible.

Max’s Taphouse

The beautiful building near the Fells Point waterfront lives up to its name, with over a hundred draft lines and a collection of more than a thousand bottles and cans of beer. But Max’s Taphouse is also an amazing smokehouse, smoking its own beef, turkey, and pork. You’ll love trying their different sauces with ribs or any of their smoked meat dishes.

Bertha’s Mussels

It was the early 1970s when Tony and Laura Norris purchased the struggling Lone Star Bar and led the way in lifting Fells Point to a location for great food, spirits, and entertainment. Inspired by a stained glass window Tony found that memorialized a woman named Bertha (and which now decorates the establishment), it was renamed Bertha’s Mussels, serving quality food and drink ever since.

With mussels as part of the name, you know Bertha’s Mussels is going to be a fantastic place if you love local seafood, but especially mussels. The variety of mussel dishes on the menu includes marinara, garlic butter, garlic butter with anchovies, garlic butter with spinach and tarragon, white wine, and coconut Thai chili. You’ll also find many other great seafood and American dishes to choose from.

The GMC Acadia and the Buick Encore GX provide striking appearances, a plethora of comfort features, and flexible cargo capacities. You can effortlessly travel anywhere you need to go with the Encore GX subcompact SUV, and it’s nearly a whole grand lower in starting price, but can it beat the 2023 Acadia’s versatility and size?

Powertrains and Performance

The 2023 Acadia’s standard engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. However, a 310-horsepower V-6 with 271 lb-ft of torque is also offered. The turbo-four will serve most Clarksville drivers just fine, bringing plenty of power. The V-6, however, is worth it if you’ll be towing, transporting a full load of people, or carrying heavier goods much of the time.

The standard 2023 Encore GX powertrain is a 137-horsepower, 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 162 lb-ft of torque. A turbo 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine produces 174 lb-ft of torque and 166 horsepower. Continuously variable automatic transmissions are the norm for front-wheel-drive wagons, whereas all-wheel-drive models use a nine-speed automatic shifter.

The Acadia can tow up to 4,000 lbs when properly equipped, while the Encore GX can pull up to 1,000 lbs, so those interested in towing will probably find the GMC more appealing. Both have enough power to stay ahead of the pack on the highway. While the differences in power may seem broad, keep in mind that the Encore GX is a smaller SUV. It also brings the refined, nearly silent ride expected of a Buick. Although the Acadia is competent and cool, it can feel a bit heavier than the Encore GX, mainly when cornering at high speeds.

Gas Mileage

Among small SUVs, the Encore GX boasts respectable fuel efficiency. Front-wheel-drive models with the standard engine achieve 29/31 city/highway mpg. All-wheel-drive vehicles achieve 26/29 city/highway mpg.

The Acadia’s base turbo-four engine in front-wheel drive achieves 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the interstate. These figures drop to 22/27 city/highway mpg with the addition of all-wheel drive. The Acadia’s optional V-6 ratings are 19/27 mpg for front-wheel drive and 19/26 mpg for all-wheel drive. The Acadia’s gas tank holds 19.4 gallons, a solid gain over the Encore GX’s 13.2 gallons. Their numbers aren’t too different, but however you compare them, the Encore GX is more frugal on gas.

Interior Comfort

The Acadia’s stylish and roomy cabin has seating options for six or seven passengers. It includes third-row 50/50-split seats that fold flat for added cargo volume. A second-row passenger-side tip option allows the seat to slide forward and angle slightly even when an empty forward-facing child seat is in place using the LATCH system. Three-zone automatic temperature controls are also standard. Check out higher trims to get heated and ventilated leather-appointed front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more. With the Denali, you can even get a dual skyscape sunroof.

The Encore GX is a five-seater, two-row SUV that’s smaller than the Acadia. However, both rows have good headroom and legroom for the segment. An air ionizer comes standard, along with a heated steering wheel, a panoramic moonroof, and cloth-leatherette seating. A large center console provides storage for food, sunglasses, and other travel items. It can also be used as a center armrest. Dual-zone automatic climate control appears on the Select or higher, and you can find GX models with a heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

Cargo Space

The Encore GX has 23.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 50.2 cubic feet when the back seats are folded down. The Acadia is more passenger oriented but still offers 12.8 cubic feet behind the third seat row. Move down the third row for up to 41.7 cubic feet or the second and third for 79 cubic feet. The Downtown Holiday Market, hosted by the DowntownDC Business Improvement District and Diverse Markets Management, is returning for its 18th year. The market, spanning the two blocks of F Street between Seventh Street and Ninth Street, features a wide variety of food and live entertainment. The market’s main entrance is located on the sidewalk in front of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Over 70 exhibitors will be participating in this year’s event, which features a variety of products and services from various businesses. Several food vendors will also set up shop along the market, providing snacks and warm beverages. In addition, there’ll be a live stage featuring over 75 different performances throughout December, creating the perfect holiday atmosphere.

The market’s main entrance is located on the sidewalk in front of the National Portrait Gallery. The Downtown Holiday Market runs from Nov. 18 to Dec. 23 and will be closed on Nov. 24 and Dec. 5. Entrance is free.

The Ghosts of Christmas Eve: The Best of TSO

The highly anticipated The Ghosts Of Christmas Eve tour by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is coming to the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, on Dec. 26. Rock out to your favorite Christmas tune at this electric event.

The TSO, which is composed of multi-platinum rock veterans, will perform updated versions of holiday classics. Be prepared for awesome pyrotechnics, energetic music, and beautiful storytelling.

The band’s charitable activities are in keeping with the vision of late TSO founder Paul O’Neill and his wife, who were known for their philanthropy. At least $1 from every ticket sale goes to a charity. Over the years, the organization has donated over $18 million to various organizations. U.S. Botanic Gardens: Seasons Greenings

The Season’s Greenings, holiday display in the U.S. Botanic Garden will feature model trains, D.C. landmarks made from plants, and beautiful holiday decor. Head over to the Bartholdi and Terrace Gardens, where you’ll find trees and shrubs with glimmering string lights, as well as several large sculptures of pollinators.

The holiday display will feature a train exhibition. You’ll be able to travel through different agricultural scenes made from plant parts from around the world. Models of the city’s most prominent landmarks, such as the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian, and the U.S. Capitol Building, will be displayed inside the garden, with a model train available for children to ride.

The event will run from Nov. 24 to Jan. 2, 2023. Tickets aren’t required to enter the center or to see the trains.

National Sculpture Garden Ice Skating

Nothing feels more magical than ice skating in the winter snow, surrounded by the magnificent architecture of national monuments and museums. The Ice Rink at the Sculpture Garden is the perfect place to enjoy some holiday fun.

You’ll have the opportunity to see large-scale sculptures by some of the most prominent artists, such as Roy Lichtenstein and Alexander Calder. There are also various events and activities for the whole family.

Don’t worry if you are new to skating. The Washington Elite Ice-Skating School provides group and private lessons for all ages and also offers group packages for birthday parties, special events, and schools.

The rink will be open from Nov. 26 to Mar. 23. Tickets start at $9 for ages 12 and under and $12 ages for ages 13+. Two 45-minute sessions are included in the fee, with a 15-minute break for ice maintenance. Skates are available for rent for $6.

“The Nutcracker”

The Washington Ballet’s delightful show, “The Nutcracker”, is back this winter season. This production is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys the holiday season and is a perfect way to start a new tradition with your loved ones.

This holiday classic takes place in 1882 in historic Georgetown, featuring notable historical figures such as George Washington and King George III. Set to the magical score of Tchaikovsky, the ballet features over a hundred dancers and over two dozen sets designed by The Washington School of Ballet.

The ballet takes place at Warner Theater on various dates from Nov. 25 to Dec. 30. Tickets range from $48 to $90, depending on the date and seating location, and are available through Live Nation. Snag your tickets before they sell out to avoid missing out on this timeless Christmas classic.

Enchant

The world’s largest Christmas light spectacular, Enchant, is returning to Nationals Park from Nov. 25 to Jan. 1. This year’s display will include an interactive light maze of over four million glittering lights and plenty of family-friendly activities.

After meandering through the maze, head on over to the Hallmark Village. There, you’ll be able to meet Santa, browse the shops, and warm up with some hot chocolate and various libations from local vendors. Tickets start at $35 for adults and $23 for children and are available for purchase online.

The Chevy Corvette has undergone numerous alterations throughout its more than 60-year history, both mechanically and in terms of style. Throughout every generation, starting with the C1 and leading to the C8 Corvettes of today, the model has been the standard to beat for a fun and capable sports car.

The Corvette has a lengthy and fascinating past. Here’s a look into each generation of Corvette, also known as the C Series. To learn more about this famed vehicle, check out the highlights from each version.

C1: (1953-1962)

After debuting with a 6-cylinder engine, the first-generation Corvette eventually transitioned to the model’s unique small-block V-8 and manual transmission. From that point, it started its journey to become a symbol of the American automobile industry.

Although there were body variants, the chassis remained the same in the first generation. The 1953 model featured fender-mounted headlights, and the 1954 model featured elegant stone guards and rocket taillights. Perhaps the most iconic features of the original Corvette were the coves — deeply sculpted recessions in the sides going wider toward the front that first appeared in 1956.

Through nine years of development, the C1 Corvette became a respectable sports car in a competitive American market. The design of the convertible’s rear, used in 1961 and 1962, would carry on into the second generation.

C2: (1963-1967)

Although it also marked the birth of the Corvette Stingray, the C2 is known as the debut of the Corvette Coupe. As opposed to convertibles only, drivers back in the day could get a sporty hardtop car in a sharp, aerodynamic shape. What’s more, the first veiled headlights were introduced during this generation, and the independent setup of the rear suspension was improved. The automobile interior had additional luxuries most cars didn’t, such as a telescopic steering wheel, radio, and headrests.

Rochester’s fuel injection system came to an end in 1965. As part of the new design, a 6.49-liter V-8 engine was initially employed, followed by the V-8 that would appear in the remaining generations. The engines ranged in power from a swift 327 horsepower to a massive 427 horsepower.

C3: (1968-1982)

This is when the automobile developed recognizable curves and became more aerodynamic. Zora Arkus-Duntov and Billy Mitchell created the third-generation C3 Corvette, taking design cues from the Mako Shark II concept car. Once the new style was established, the vehicle had only a few minor body modifications, although it did see the introduction of the first removable T-top roof.

In 1978, a unique fastback model with an enhanced interior was produced, along with special edition Silver Anniversary and Indy 500 pace cars. The 1980s saw continuous body development for the Corvette, which would ratchet up during the C4 years.

C4: (1984-1996)

The one 1983 Chevy Corvette, which was never fully constructed, is kept in the National Corvette Museum. In 1984, a brand-new version made its debut and embraced a sleeker, more contemporary design with a completely new body style and chassis.

The C4 generation also saw the birth of the ZR1 super-performance and luxury trim level. With every engine modification for the C4 from 1985 until the end of production in 1996, standard horsepower grew steadily. In 1991, the front bumper had a style change, replacing the concave rear bumper with a convex shape.

C5: (1997-2004)

In 1997, the Corvette got a 345-horsepower LS1 V-8 engine with an aluminum block. In addition to active keyless entry, a hardtop variant was created in 1999, joining the coupe and convertible options. In 2001, the LS6 V-8 Corvette Z06 had a top speed of 170 mph, a remarkable record at the time, and a zero to 60 mph time of 4.3 seconds.C6: (2005-2013)

2005 brought a new Corvette that was lighter, more compact, 5.1 inches shorter, and on a longer wheelbase. The Z06 also made a comeback with improved aerodynamic carbon-fiber trim and an aluminum frame with a fixed magnesium engine cradle. The Ron Fellows Championship Edition Corvette was released the next year, making it the first limited edition signed Corvette in history.

In 2012, Chevrolet commemorated its 100th birthday by releasing the centennial edition package, including magnetic selective ride control, satin-black graphics, satin-black wheels with a red stripe, and carbon flash metallic paint.

C7: (2014-2019)

The Corvette’s engine, chassis, and body underwent a thorough makeover in 2014. The Grand Sport made a comeback in 2017 with an engine from the Z51 and a large body inspired by the Z06. The C7 Corvette had an aggressive body shape that significantly varied from earlier iterations to attract younger consumers and refreshes the car’s image. In 2018, the Carbon 65 limited edition was unveiled.

The first car to use the name Stingray since the C3, the new Corvette preserved the exposed headlight style. The C7 will likely be the final front-engine Corvette, as the C8’s modern designs have all been mid-engine. The ZR1’s return to the Corvette family might make 2019 the best year of the generation. It had record-breaking performance, power, and handling, all with a manual transmission.

C8: (2020-Present)

The C8 Corvette made its debut in California in front of a packed airplane hangar. The modern generation borrows from several prior iterations, as well as CERV Corvette prototypes. For the first time in the car’s history, the C8 Corvette brought a mid-engine setup. It’s available as a convertible or a separate design with a removable roof piece.

The next generation Corvette’s 6.2-liter, naturally aspirated V-8 engine has 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Debuting the same year, the 2021 Corvette Stingray quickly ascended to the top of the list of the most coveted new sports cars.

Depending on the engine, the GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL can have different fuel-efficiency ratings. The length and weight differences can cause the regular Yukon to have a slightly higher fuel economy. Both models achieve 16/20 mpg in city/highway mileage with the standard engine. On the larger V-8, the Yukon earns 14/20 mpg in city/highway mileage, while the XL gets 14/19 mpg. The turbo-diesel engine, offering 21/27 mpg in city/highway mileage or 20/26 mpg on the XL, is the most economical in the lineup.

Tow Ratings and Performance

The towing capacity of the regular-length Yukon ranges from 7,700 to 8,400 lbs depending on the engine and features you select. However, an XL model’s carrying capacity ranges from 7,500 to 8,300 lbs.
